What is expected of a vacation package? Well, it has to be inclusive of accommodation, travel connections and at least one meal. Some people prefer the minimal version which supplies a simple or continental breakfast so people are required to explore the local scene and discover local culture. Other people require the all inclusive vacation packages where everything is already taken care of. The all inclusive vacation package was created by Cookes Travel Services of London for the monied elite of the day. They would set off on the Grand Tours of the East. The vacation packages would include luxury travel on the Orient Express and fabulous elephant rides to the bejeweled former Rajahs palaces. This is where the term P.O.S.H. was first created. It stands for Port Out Starboard Home. In this way you were able to have a state room on the port side of the ship on your way out to India and a starboard state room on the way back. This way you wouldnt have to be put out by the roasting sun on your passage. It was a few years later that the vacation packages we now take for granted came into being.

Well how do you assess cruise vacation packages? Oops, I made a presumption then. A few years back, you would buy a return flight, arrive at your destination, grab a cab and say take me to a good hotel that isnt too expensive! Those were nave statements we took for granted. Today, during holiday season, that question will evoke in the cabbies mind the word sitting duck. You just stated that you have cash in your pocket and you are prepared to blindly hand over your holiday spending money. And the cabbie will expect a handsome tip for sharing this local insight. We hope those times are gone. In todays hi-tech world people to not want to jeopardize their limited and precious vacation. They need a vacation PACKAGE. People would rather not concern themselves with local currencies, if the water is safe to drink and where they should eat. They want all-inclusive vacation resorts that guarantee them the fundamentals of any quality vacation. They need to have it assured that there is transportation to and from their resort and that the pool can be accessed without having to cross a motorway or main route. They also need to know that the villa has a safe in which they can place their monies and identity papers (passports or visas) while they are asleep beside the pool.

Vacation resorts are sadly an escape from our every day work routines. I say sadly because it presupposes resistance to the major part of our wakeful day. The pattern of expending 65 per cent of our wakeful day simply to pay bills has never seemed logical to me. The conceptualization that we may not have sufficient in the future and so need to keep working for a living, doesnt add up. Personal experience show me that if you follow your passion, something unexpected always shows up. Just like they say if you do what you have always done, then you can expect what you always get. There is no room for something new to occur. What is extended is the relief of ten days away from the system in order to recover on your European tours. Where is the sense in that? Definitely, if you stop knocking your head against a brick-wall it will feel great when you stop, but that doesnt countenance knocking your head to begin with!
